Happy spooky season from the Wheatland Title Family of Companies. In a month known for tricks – and treats – we also wanted to spotlight October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. That means, yes, it’s time to talk about wire fraud once again.
You all have done a great job talking to your buyers and sellers about the dangers of wire fraud, but there is still plenty of work to be done. Scammers continue to get smarter, and our defenses must keep getting stronger. The Wheatland Title team is always talking about this issue with our team members, partners and customers, but here are some more tips you can use to make sure you’re keeping up this fight.
Verify the closing process in detail before Closing Day. This way you know what to expect. Any last-minute changes should raise concerns and red flags.
Use a secure email account. We’re talking about one that uses strong passwords and 2FA. Always be on the lookout for fraud emails – even if you have a spam filter you trust.
Call. Don’t email: Confirm your wiring instructions by phone using a known number before transferring funds. Don’t use phone numbers or links from an email, no matter how legitimate it looks.
Shout wire fraud warnings from the rooftops! Tell anyone who will listen that cybercriminals could always be lurking, just waiting to pounce. If something seems off, it probably is! We’re always here to help you ward off danger.
